photoblog image Dhak

Dhak

Finally got to know the name of the flower. Its called Dhak or Palash in Haryana where I clicked this. In Hindi it is called Palash in most parts of India which means flame of the forest, rightly so. Once the flowers cover the whole forest, it seems like a flame.

Scientific name: Butea monosperma, Butea frondosa
Family: Faboideae / Leguminosae / Papilionaceae

Credits: My friend Rakhi who helped me with the "research" (wish she had a link I could point you guys to :P) and http://www.toptropicals.com/html/toptropicals/articles/trees/butea.htm

I've never seen this in my life, Thomas! It looks like peach slices are growing on the tree, which would be perfect for our state, Georgia, known as the Peach State in the USA.

I love the way you have captured this! And the added link was very interesting to read and see all the blossoms up close.
Thomas Mathew: I'm glad u liked it Ginnie, but the better of the close-up shots is yet to come - tommorow, I hope you like that one too smile
Very pretty!
Thomas Mathew: Thanx Ash, nice to have you back after a long break smile

This must look absolutely wonderful 'for real' glowing against the sky.

The flower looks as if the plant is a member of the pea family, any idea?
Thomas Mathew: Ohh yes Ellie, its a wonderful sight when the whole forest is full of these flowers - no wonder its called the flame of the forest. I'm really not sure what family it belongs to. Here's the link I got the details from - http://www.toptropicals.com/html/toptropicals/articles/trees/butea.htm Hope you can get more insight there smile
